Bio
A native of Indianapolis, Dr. Helft completed his BA in general studies in the humanities and his MD at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine, and fellowships in hematology/oncology and clinical medical ethics at the University of Chicago. Dr. Helft joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana in 2001, where he is currently a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology. His clinical work is based in the Gastrointestinal Oncology Program at the Indiana University Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. His primary focus is on the clinical treatment of colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, biliary tumors, and upper and lower gastrointestinal cancers. He strongly believes that superb clinical care of cancer requires a strong partnership between patients and their care team, the foundation of which is highly personalized, compassionate, and open communication.
