Bio
I am interested in establishing reliable, non-invasive prognostic biomarkers of acute brain injury in order to prevent long-term neurodisability in children in low- and middle-income countries because of what I see as a critical gap in research priorities in these settings. I hope that my work will lead to increased neuropsychological referrals for early cognitive screening of childhood survivors of acute brain injury, and the development of therapeutic interventions to prevent or reduce problems that can persist into adulthood and impact the health-related quality of life of children.
I have supervised clinical research labs focused on immuno-epidemiology, pathogenesis and long-term outcomes in pediatric severe malaria in the United States, Kenya, and Uganda, and managed clinical trials of hydroxyurea therapy and zinc for infection prevention in sickle cell anemia in Uganda.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have volunteered my experience in global infectious diseases and clinical research management to understand the transmission potential of and immune-protective correlates against SARS-CoV-2 infections, locally in Indianapolis.
