Indiana University School of Medicine believes that honoring outstanding teaching, research and service is an important part of our culture.

Campus-Wide Awards

IU School of Medicine faculty are eligible for a variety of campus-wide awards in teaching, civic engagement, diversity, mentoring and research conferred by IU Indianapolis.

Excellence in Faculty Mentoring Awards

Mentoring among faculty at IU School of Medicine is crucial in sustaining a vital faculty community, promoting faculty development and increasing faculty retention. The annual "Excellence in Faculty Mentoring" award underscores the commitment to endorse mentoring within our faculty. The purpose is to recognize the outstanding mentoring efforts of one clinical and one basic science faculty member each year who actively mentor other faculty members and learners. These prestigious awards acknowledge the time and dedication faculty mentors devote to fostering colleagues' and learners' career development and academic success in research, education, service and clinical practice. In addition, these awards allow the IU School of Medicine to honor and celebrate the valuable efforts of faculty mentors who embody the spirit of mentoring.

Inspirational Educator Award

The inspirational educator award recognizes faculty who inspire learners and motivate them to work hard and achieve more than they thought possible. This prestigious award acknowledges the time and dedication faculty take to be exceptional teachers. Honorees are consistently noted for their teaching effectiveness, commitment to learning and passion for biomedical education. Long after their experience with faculty members of this caliber, learners recall an impact on their education and the passion for medicine and/or research demonstrated. These awards allow IU School of Medicine to honor and celebrate the valuable efforts of educators who motivate and inspire others.

Mark Brothers Award

Dr. and Mrs. Guey C. Mark created the endowed Mark Brothers Lectureship to recognize nationally and internationally renowned medical scientists of Asian descent. The Mark Brothers Award was established in 1997 in honor of Dr. Mark’s brothers, who immigrated from Canton and settled in South Bend, Indiana, where they built a successful restaurant business. Because of their reverence and respect for higher education, the brothers supported their youngest brother, Dr. Mark, in his pursuit of a career in medicine. The award is presented annually and consists of a plaque and a prize of $5,000. Dr. Mark was a member of the IU school of Medicine’s Class of 1954 and passed away on August 4, 2010.

Outstanding Community Engagement Award

The Faculty Community Relations Committee (FCRC) Award for Outstanding Community Engagement recognizes and encourages exceptional community engagement by IU School of Medicine faculty in activities such as, but not limited to, volunteerism, community-based learning or research, outreach, partnerships, and curricular engagement.

Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Diversity Award

IU School of Medicine created the Outstanding Faculty Commitment to Diversity Award in 2021 to recognize faculty who demonstrate a commitment to the creation, promotion, or advancement of diversity on our campuses. Support of the success of our community in the School of Medicine is of paramount importance. This award encourages and reinforces behaviors that support learner, faculty, and staff success and the strategic efforts garnered towards diversity, equity, and inclusion. The school will support up to two awards annually. Awards will be funded through the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

Outstanding Staff Commitment to Diversity Award

IU School of Medicine created the Outstanding Staff Commitment to Diversity Award in 2019 to recognize a professional staff employee who demonstrates a commitment to the creation, promotion, or advancement of diversity on our campuses. Support of the success of our community in the School of Medicine is of paramount importance. This award encourages and reinforces behaviors that support learner, faculty, and staff success and the strategic efforts garnered towards diversity, equity, and inclusion. The school will support up to two awards annually. Awards will be funded through the Center for Inclusive Excellence.

Scholar Educator Award

The purpose of the scholar educator award is to recognize faculty who go beyond simply teaching and approach education in a scholarly manner. This prestigious award acknowledges faculty who approach teaching and learning from a scholarly lens. Honorees are consistently noted for their teaching effectiveness, commitment to learning, educational leadership, scholarly activity related to teaching and learning, and passion for biomedical education. These awards allow IU School of Medicine to honor and celebrate the scholarly contributions of educators.

Steven C. Beering Award

The IU School of Medicine Steven C. Beering Award honors an internationally recognized individual for outstanding research contributions to the advancement of biomedical or clinical science. The Beering Award was established in 1983, honoring the important contributions Dr. Beering made to IU School of Medicine as its dean from 1974 to 1983. Dr. Beering was the youngest dean appointed to the School of Medicine. He went on to become the president of Purdue University, serving until his retirement on August 14, 2000. The creation of the award was announced on June 24, 1983 and the award is presented annually and consists of a medal and a prize of $25,000. Eight of the past Beering Award recipients have become Nobel laureates, either before or after receipt of this award.

Trustees' Teaching Award

Each year the Indiana University Board of Trustees recognizes faculty excellence in teaching through a program known as the Trustees’ Teaching Awards. Excellence in teaching is the primary factor for selection. Each school is responsible for the annual award process. Approximately 50 outstanding IU school of Medicine teachers will receive the award each year.

University Distinguished Professorship & Teaching Awards

University-wide awards for distinguished professorships, teaching awards, and outstanding service contributions are conferred by the Office of University Ceremonies.

Volunteer & Adjunct Faculty Teaching Awards (VFTA)

Volunteer and adjunct faculty at the nine IU School of Medicine campuses are vital to education and the preparation of future physicians and scientists. This award honors the teaching and mentoring contributions of our volunteer and adjunct faculty members. These awards allow the IU School of Medicine to honor and celebrate the scholarly contributions of an important group of educators. A certificate of recognition will be given to each faculty member.
