Research in the Department of Pediatric

The Department of Pediatrics is the largest department at IU School of Medicine with over 400 faculty members, 19 subspecialties, and 21 fellowship programs. The department is considered one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation and ranked #13 in U.S. News & World Report.

The comprehensive research programs in the department include basic science, pre-clinical research, global health, clinical implementation and public health research. The department is ranked 8th in the nation in pediatric R01 equivalent awards (JAMA Pediatrics 2018 Mar; 172(3) 297-299). NIH funding increased from 13th ($15 million) in 2013 to 6th ($37.5 million) in 2022. Career development awards (e.g., K08/K23) increased from six (2009-2014) to 32 (2015-2022). The Indiana Pediatric Scientist Award K12 program is aimed to identify and develop a talented and diverse cohort of pediatric physician scientists.
