Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core

The Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core serves CAB members with Andy Saykin and Sophia Wangas an educational resource on Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias for health professionals, patients, research participants, caregivers, and family members. As part of its mission to outreach, recruit, and engage diverse and underrepresented groups the core is increasing outreach and recruitment activities in the African American community and has begun working with the Hispanic/Latino community in Indianapolis, a relatively young and quickly growing community. These underrepresented groups are at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease but have historically lower participation rates in Alzheimer’s disease research. All of these activities are considered to be essential components of Indiana’s strategic plan to achieve the National Alzheimer’s Plan Act (NAPA) goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease by 2025.

This core has developed numerous important relationships with health professionals and service providers throughout Indiana, which increases the visibility and reach of the center’s programs. Developing culturally sensitive recruitment strategies and educational activities is extremely important and necessary to advance Alzheimer’s disease research in meaningful ways.

Goals

  • Conduct outreach and engagement activities to patients, research participants, caregivers and family members, healthcare professionals, and the community at large
  • Recruit and retain a diverse group of research participants, with a focus on underrepresented groups who are at higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias
