Indiana Consultations for Healthcare Providers in Addiction, Mental Health, and Perinatal Psychiatry Program (CHAMP)

The Indiana Consultations for Healthcare providers in Addiction, Mental Health, and Perinatal Psychiatry Program (CHAMP) within Indiana University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry is an innovative adult and perinatal psychiatry access program for any adult health care provider. CHAMP offers a free statewide provider-to-provider phone consultation line, referral service, and educational opportunities.

The program is intended for use by any health care provider in Indiana who sees adult or perinatal patients experiencing mental health concerns and substance use disorders to directly speak with a psychiatrist about a specific patient case or general questions. The program aims to improve Hoosier adults' access to best practice behavioral health care across the state by supporting health care providers in their local communities with guidance from psychiatric specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does CHAMP work?

Providers call 317-274-2400 and after a short intake with a CHAMP health navigator, are connected to a psychiatrist. The provider will be connected to a psychiatrist within 30 minutes or at a specific callback time that works for them. At the conclusion of the conversation, the provider will receive a brief written documentation of the recommendations via encrypted email.

  • Who is eligible to use these services?

This program is available to any medical health care provider in the state of Indiana who work with adults 18+ patients (including physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, nurses, social workers, etc.). Patients, family and caregivers are NOT eligible to use CHAMP.

  • How can I get started with CHAMP?

We would encourage providers or clinic directors to please register the provider before calling line. However, CHAMP navigators can register provider on phone which will only take 1-2 minutes to gather general information about provider and their practice.

    Please register at https://redcap.link/champregistration

  • Why would I call?

    You have questions about:

    • assessment
    • diagnosis
    • treatment planning, including medication management or other treatments
    • referral/community resources

  • When are CHAMP psychiatrists available?

The consultation line (317-274-2400) is staffed Monday-Friday from 9 am-5 pm excluding university holidays. You can also request an online consultation at https://redcap.link/onlineconsultation. Please email any questions to champ@iu.edu

  • How soon will my call be returned?

Most calls are answered live, but all calls will be returned within 30 minutes. Once the need for the call is identified, the navigator will inform the caller of the follow-up time. Psychiatrists can be paged immediately and will often return calls within an hour and resources and referrals can be identified in real time. Most consultations should be concluded within the business day.

  • Will the psychiatrist take over care for my patient?

No, the psychiatrist can provide information and guidance, but the primary care physician will continue to provide care to their patient. If ongoing care is needed, the physician can make a referral to appropriate medication management facilities in their area. The psychiatrist can provide ongoing consultation regarding a case, if needed.

  • Is it appropriate to call when my patient is in crisis?

If a patient is currently in crisis or imminent danger, call 911. If a patient is not in imminent danger, program consultants are available to discuss best practices for treatment and support.

  • Can someone else from my office call to set up a consultation?

Yes, any clinic staff member may call to set up a consultation. Please be sure the caller is able to provide information about provider availability for follow-up, as well as key information about the case to guide the consultation or referrals.

  • Can I request consultation online?

An online consultation request form can be filled out at https://redcap.link/onlineconsultation. Please fill out the required fields.

  • Who pays for this program?

CHAMP is offered at no cost to providers thanks to generous support from the IU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Indiana FSSA Division of Mental Health and Addictions.
