Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Current Residents

Chief Residents

Chief Residents provide leadership and support to residents in the combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency program. They serve as mentors and advocates for the residents and set a positive tone for the program.

2022-2023 Chief Residents

Libby Rourke

I'm from Ozark, Missouri and went to University of Missouri - Columbia for both undergrad and medical school. I was lucky to get to work with some great Med-Peds attendings and residents early in med school and it was a great fit. The people I met and the mix of adult and pediatric medicine, particularly in primary care, along with the equal training time on both sides had me sold on Med-Peds.

When I began looking into IU for residency, it was clear that they had everything I wanted: large patient volume, wide variety of acuity on both IM and Peds, a well-established Med-Peds presence at the academic health center, and a huge Med-Peds graduate base both locally and elsewhere. Being the largest and one of the oldest Med-Peds programs in the country is such an advantage for our residents - the opportunities for mentorship and professional support within the Med-Peds community here is one of the top reasons I'd recommend the program to others matching this year. The community on the personal side among our residents is the other driving reason to look at IU. Our large program is like a big quirky family, and the size means that even if multiple people in my class are on call or busy on any given night, it's still easy to get a group together to hang out.

After graduation I'll be pursuing a career in combined primary care potentially with some pediatric hospital medicine mixed in. As chief residents this year, Ishani and I are excited to support our residents as they grow both personally and professionally at IU and to have a bigger part in shaping the educational experience for our program this year!

Ishani Shah

Born and raised in metro-Detroit, I went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine for medical school. I never imagined that I would one day end up in Indianapolis, but once I came to IU for my interview, it was settled for me. The program had everything I had been looking for – from an educational standpoint, this included strong categorical training on both sides with a wide range of clinical acuity and pathology, a diverse patient population, a commitment to resident education, as well as the opportunity to explore a career in global health (I am thrilled to say that through our AMPATH program, I had the opportunity to live and work in Kenya for 6 weeks)! Being the largest Med-Peds residency program in the country, we also have a huge Med-Peds presence on campus – which means that the support and mentorship from your co-residents, fellows, and attendings is endless. Whatever your career aspirations may be – we can help you achieve it! Personally, I look forward to pursuing a career in academic medicine as a Med-Peds Hospitalist, with some global health work sprinkled in.

The most valuable asset of our program, however, is the people here. From the moment my interview day started, I was greeted by the warmth of the IU Med-Peds family. I have so much admiration and appreciation for my colleagues, and I know that I have formed bonds that will last a lifetime. Whether it is getting through a tough night shift together, attending one of our Med-Peds social parties, bouldering after work, or gathering for ‘The Bachelor’ & wine nights, the memories are endless. As chiefs this year, Libby and I look forward to continually shaping and improving our residency program, helping our residents achieve their full potential while contributing to the family-like atmosphere. We invite you to come learn more about our program and why we think IU is so special!

Why IU Med Peds? I was super excited about coming to IU Med-Peds because of the program size and knowing that I would have 13 new friends coming into residency and plenty of support around me! I was also really happy to match into a program that had strong and stable categorical programs. After being here for only a couple of months, I can honestly say that IU Med-Peds is a big family and there are always wonderful people here to support you, help you, and encourage you to keep working hard and be the best version of yourself! Indianapolis is also a super fun city to live in - I live in the suburbs and can get downtown in under 15 minutes, but live equally close to state parks, nature preserves, and green space to provide a great balance!

Why IU Med-Peds? Attending IU for med school, I knew a lot of the residents and could see how supportive the program was. IU gives residents endless opportunities because the system is so large; no matter what I decide to do with my career, I know I'll have endless options and support here at IU!

Hobbies: Running, cooking, eating, rock climbing, audiobooks, my dogs, my cat, my TV

Why IU Med-Peds? Everyone likes to emphasize the size of our program and I have to agree - it's the perfect size. We're still small enough that I can connect with everyone in my class, but big enough that I get to work with other med-peds people everywhere I am- so far a majority of my attendings, seniors, and co-interns on service have been Med-Peds! This is a place that "does Med-Peds" very well. Indianapolis is also great! Coming from the PNW, I was worried about the flatness of the horizon but quickly realized that what Indiana lacks in mountains, Indianapolis makes up for with cool urban trails, neat neighborhoods, and affordable stuff to do. Overall, this felt like an ideal city to do residency- and more specifically- a fantastic place to do a Med-Peds residency.

Hobbies: Soccer, Golf, Hiking, Spikeball, Washington DC and Miami Hurricanes Sports, Medical Podcasts

Why IU Med-Peds? Having the largest residency class means I ALWAYS have a co-resident free to hang out after a long shift/week and there’s always a senior or graduate who I can seek advice with for my career interests. As a medical podcast junkie, we have awesome weekly conferences that have featured IU Med Peds grads including “Kidney Boy” Dr. Joel Topf and Dr. Chris ”The Chiu Man” Chiu from The Curbsiders. The volume, diversity, and level of care offered from our 5 hospitals on a single campus is, in my opinion, unmatched. Our Global Health and Morris Green programs offer remarkable opportunities. Finally, I love Indy! Incredible food, drink, sports and culture, something fun to do any night of the week, it’s extremely affordable, and there’s no traffic! When evaluating programs in my residency search, I always ended up thinking back to my interview day with IU. That’s how I knew it was my dream program!

WHY IU Med-Peds? The strength of the residents and program leadership made it difficult to imagine going anywhere else-- they set the bar very high! But beyond that, knowing that the internal medicine and pediatrics programs were both independently strong combined with the incredible diversity of patients and pathologies that you get to see given our large catchment area and multiple different hospitals made IU's program really stand out. Now having been a resident in the program, I can say the program size and Med/Peds presence at IU also makes a huge difference; no matter where you are, you are bound to run into another Med-Peds person, and it just makes the residency experience that much better.

Why IU Med-Peds? I had an incredible experience with the Med-Peds residents here at IU while I was a medical student. They were some of the kindest, most driven people I had worked with, and they took a sincere interest in helping and teaching the medical students while providing top notch patient care. I chose IU Med-Peds to become part of that tradition of excellent patient care with a focus on teaching and medical education.

Professional Interests: Most likely pediatric cardiology +/- adult congenital heart disease, but I also love pulmonology and hospitalist medicine, so we will see where life takes me!

Hobbies: Hiking, camping, rock climbing, martial arts, cuddling my geriatric dog, and trying new restaurants with friends

Why IU Med-Peds? The culture, people, and strong Med-Peds presence are what initially drew me to IU Med-Peds, and are the reasons that I am proud to be a resident here. The people at IU, including my co-residents, the program leadership, and the faculty have been absolutely incredible. The supportive culture is so refreshing, and I feel fortunate to have a program director who advocates for and listens to his residents. Residency training can be tough, especially if you moved from out of state, with long work hours and a steep learning curve. Being at a program that feels like home, and having many (14 in each class so plenty of people to hang out with and lean on!) co-residents that feel like family, have been essential in my ability to adjust to residency and a new city/state so quickly. Finally, the med-peds program here is very well-established. At IU, people are excited to learn that you are med-peds, and numerous doors open up since many of our faculty across several specialties and the 5 hospital system are dual-trained as well. I could not be happier with my choice. Now that I am a resident at this program, I can say with 110% confidence that I would choose it again!

Why IU Med-Peds? IU had all the things I was looking for in a program: great training sites (nationally ranked free-standing children's hospital, county, and VA), a strong Med-Peds presence and reputation (with some cool notable alumni), and nice people with whom I felt I got along (even over a virtual interview). How happy I was to find all of that confirmed and more upon arriving, when I was met with such kindness and support. I traded in Southern Hospitality for Hoosier Hospitality and I am proud to be a part of the IU Med-Peds fam!

Why IU Med-Peds? IU checked all of the boxes I was looking for in a Med-Peds program -- large size, strong med-peds presence at the institution, a large academic center with the opportunity to rotate through multiple hospitals, and a standalone children's hospital. Having a lot of fellow med-peds residents also provides plenty of opportunities for socializing which has been amazing for somebody not originally from the Midwest. I ultimately chose to come to IU because of the familial atmosphere I felt on interview day and the support I have received from my (now) co-residents along the way.

Why IU Med-Peds? I loved working with the Med-Peds residents as a medical student. Everyone was so welcoming and always willing to teach. I felt that that the residents all knew each other and were very close, despite the program being the largest Med-Peds program. IU has a wonderful program and the strength of the categorical programs are equal. I was looking for a strong pediatric program in addition to the medicine program and IU offered that. There is also a great Med-Peds presence at IU, which means lots of opportunities for mentorship! Overall, I was ecstatic to match with IU and am very grateful to have the opportunity to work with caring, hardworking, and admirable co-residents and staff at a variety of teaching facilities (5 total) over the next four years!

Why IU Med-Peds? IU was my first interview of the season, and quickly became the program I compared all others too. The residents are down-to-earth and are equally comfortable pulling out clinical pearls as kicking back and enjoying a drink at a local brewery or tearing up the soccer field. The size of the program inherently attracts people with diverse interests within Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and IU has enough resources to facilitate all of our career goals. Plus, when life happens, multiple people step up to help each other out, which has been great in a new city!

Why IU Med-Peds? You really can't beat having such a strong faculty presence of Med-Peds doctors, whether you're on the medicine or pediatrics side. Both faculty and residents alike, are well integrated amongst their peers. I also think IU is unique because there are so many opportunities for research and advocacy that are well integrated into the curriculum. Additionally, we have the ability to work with faculty on projects even with busy resident schedules. It was an easy decision to stay at IU!

The global health program through AMPATH is nationally-renowned. There's a good number of Spanish speakers (which is something I looked for) who live in Indy. Oh, and it's warmer than Minnesota! This allows us to see diverse pathology while preparing us to function in a variety of settings. The residents are well-supported on both sides and the program is very readily there to help us pursue whatever our career goals may be. I was looking for a program that would offer a very diverse and robust clinical experience by seeing a wide array of pathology. Hobbies: Playing disc golf with friends, competing in pub trivia, hiking around different lakes in the area, going to the local combined dog park/brewery with my co-residents’ dogs!

Why IU: I am so happy I matched at IU for several reasons. First, of course, is the people. The Med-Peds residents I met during medical school were genuine, hardworking, and kind. And that only became more obvious as I met more of them throughout interview season. Second, the diversity of clinical training sites was very important to me as I was looking at different programs. As IU Med-Peds residents, we rotate at several different hospitals including the VA, the county safety net hospital, and tertiary and quaternary referral centers. The catchment area of these hospitals is massive — the entire state of Indiana — so we have the opportunity to see and manage a wide variety of pathology. Lastly, Indianapolis is a fun place to live! It is a younger, growing city with plenty of fun things to do within the city, and plenty of nature to explore within just a short drive. I am so glad to be staying here at IU for residency!

Why IU: The sense of community, supportive environment, and mentorship. I clicked with the residents at my interview dinner, and knew I wanted to be a part of that community. I could tell the residents worked hard and received good training, but were also happy and supported by each other and the staff. IU has an extremely supportive environment, starting from the medical school all the way up to fellowship, and my rotations so far have only confirmed this. Additionally, because IU is such a large institution, it is able to support a diverse set of interests and set you up for success with the appropriate mentorship, which can be hard to find! From a city standpoint, I moved from a relatively big city, and Indianapolis was the perfect balance of big-city living and nature for me. I have been pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the city too. In short, it's a great program with great people in a great city.

Professional Interests: Critical care, cardiology, endocrinology, hospitalist

Hobbies: In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my better half, Emma, and our new pup Meeko! Also, I enjoy basketball whenever I get a chance and I recently picked up volleyball.

Why IU: There are multiple reasons why I chose IU. For one, the IU med-peds family has a great vibe (and when I say family, I am referring to residents, significant others, leadership, all of the above!). Second, I was incredibly impressed with not only the med-peds program, but also the categorical programs. Lastly, Indianapolis is a cool city with a strong foodie scene and a balance of big-city and outdoor activities for everyone. I have only been here a few months, but I have a blast on all of my off days and the city lends itself to be a relaxing place to live amidst our busy lives!

Professional Interests: Currently leaning towards combination of hospitalist and outpatient primary care.

Hobbies: Trying new restaurants and breweries with friends, cooking, various sports (soccer and flag football are my favorite)

Why IU: One of the first things that drew me to IU was the noticeably strong and independent Med-Peds identity the program has, as well as being supported by very strong medicine and pediatrics categorical programs. I knew that through the variety of hospitals and diverse patient population, I would be set up for success no matter what avenue of Med-Peds I chose to take after residency. Like I am sure many others have said as well though, the thing that sold me the most was the people. On my interview it was clear that the residents and their significant others were one big family, one of which I am so happy to be a part of now!

Why IU: Coming from a program that does not have med-peds, the culture and program presence at Indiana blew me away. You’ll find yourself working alongside med-peds faculty and residents on nearly every rotation, and our residency’s strength and reputation has made med-peds a way of life at IU. The opportunities here are endless, and no matter how broad or narrow your interests, there is someone to guide you along the way. I also think it goes without saying that the people make the program. The best part of my week is hanging out with my co-residents exploring Indy, catching up at noon conference, or just chillin’ out on call. Dr. Brady has created an environment that set the bar for my residency search. He is heavily invested not only in our training and education, but the overall well-being of each resident. Our residency program is truly special, and I couldn’t be more excited to spend my next 4 years at IU.

Why IU: I got along really well with all of the residents on interview day! I was looking for a larger program with a strong med peds presence. I’m interested in fellowship and a lot of the residents have gone on to do combined fellowships. Also, there is no traffic in Indy, which is life changing coming from Chicago.

Why IU? I loved the people at IU! My conversations with all of the residents on interview day were fun and easy, and I could tell how much everyone loved IU and their co-residents. It was also really important to me to have an equally balanced program, with a standalone children's hospital + a wide variety of clinical sites and patient populations. The large Med-Peds presence & program is also a big plus (no one asks "What is Med-Peds?) -- and having 13 built-in BFFs is making the transition to residency much better!

Eastern Virginia Medical School

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Undergrad: Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA)

Medical School: Eastern Virginia Medical School (Norfolk, VA)

Professional Interests: Currently unsure. Leaning toward Cardiology, Heme/Onc, or dual hospitalist with a focus on underserved populations.

Hobbies: I'm a huge foodie and have tried over 12 new restaurants in my first 1.5 months here (hoping to try at least one new restaurant every 2 weeks)! Indianapolis offers multiple restaurant options for almost every cuisine, which is a huge perk (especially great for Riley hospitalist night shifts). I also love board games and exploring nature. There are some great trails not too far from the city, and the canal area in downtown Indianapolis is beautiful for a quick scenic walk after work or on days off.

Why IU: As cliche as it sounds, the main reason was the people - our residents seemed like some of the happiest residents I had met across my entire interview trail. One thing I remember the most was that my interview guides were also dressed in suits to help us feel like we blended in. I absolutely love my intern class and am so thankful every day that I matched here. Faculty are very interested in teaching and do a great job of balancing autonomy with support and guidance. Also, IU offers a little bit of everything - from global health opportunities, to research, and even opportunities to focus on academics/teaching through the Clinical Educator Track in addition to the normally embedded teaching opportunities in each rotation. It's a great place to go if you have interests in a little bit of everything and want to further explore your career options.

Hobbies: Exploring Indianapolis restaurants, classic cars, binging Netflix, group fitness classes

Why IU? For so many reasons, IU was the program I compared all others to while I was on the interview trail. It was evident the strong presence Med-Peds had at IU on my interview day, and it has become even more apparent in my first few months of residency. Not only is the program well-respected amongst categorical sides, but the integration is seamless. With such a large program, it is also easy to find a Med-Peds colleague anywhere you go. The diversity of educational opportunities that are present from the five hospitals we rotate at is incredible. Although I am currently undecided in what I want to pursue in the future, I am confident that I will be set up for success no matter what I end up choosing. Additionally, the people here are some of the brightest (yet modest) individuals I have had the pleasure to meet and work alongside. Everyone is dedicated, passionate and kind; it is true that we are one big family who looks out for one another and I am so happy to say that I am part of it.

Hobbies: Running, biking, traveling, watching The Great British Bake Off, and going on hikes with my fiancée.

Why IU: My favorite part about this program is the people. During my interview day it was clear to me that the residents are friends outside of the hospital and have a close relationship. Since I have begun my training at IU I have been welcomed into the Med-Peds family and now I look forward to working with my friends every day. The size of the program at IU is a benefit as we have our own identity but still seamlessly integrate with our categorical colleagues. Med-Peds also has a huge presence within the IU health system, which is an asset as there is a system in place to support residents with whatever their goal may be. Indianapolis is also a great town to live in with lots of running trails, it is very bike-friendly, and the nightlife scene has something for everyone. I wish you all the best this interview season and I hope that you find your perfect fit just like I did here at IU!

Hobbies: Exploring local restaurants and microbreweries, boating and waterskiing, audiobooks, and smoking foods

Why IU? Looking at objective measures for Med-Peds programs, IU has many desirable qualities - HUGE Med-Peds presence, diverse training locations (urban county hospital, university hospital, private hospital, VA hospital, and a free-standing children's hospital!), and the ability to pursue just about any passion in medicine that one's heart could desire. What sold IU though, was the people (I know every program says this, so here is some evidence). During my interview, it was easy to see that IU Med-Peds is a group of intelligent, humble, fun, and - most importantly - kind humans. Since I have been here, that initial impression could not be more true. From the daily visits from upperclassmen (and our PD!) during our first week of residency, the eagerness of my Med-Peds superiors to take me under their wing in continuity clinic, to the clinical skills of the Med-Peds senior residents and attendings with whom I've already worked, my experiences have only reinforced that IU is a phenomenal place to train for Med-Peds.

Professional Interest: Health Disparities; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice; Medical Education

Hobbies: Spending time with my wife and daughter, listening to music and audio engineering, board games and video games

Why IU? I chose IU Med-Peds for a number of reasons. Firstly, coming from a medical school without a Med-Peds program, I was blown away by how strong of a presence Med-Peds has within the community here. The diversity of the patient population was also a very strong draw for me. As someone who had never lived in Indiana before, I was surprised just how multi-cultural of a city Indianapolis is and getting to treat patients from a variety of different backgrounds has been incredibly fulfilling! What's more, the wide array of clinical environments we get to work in and the large catchment area that our hospitals cover offers unparalleled clinical diversity as well. Coming to IU, I knew I would get exceptional training regardless of what type of career I wanted to pursue and that I would be able to do so in a city, community, and program that provided the best opportunities and support for me and my family.

Our program is large enough that we often find ourselves crossing paths with multiple Med/Peds residents, in addition to allowing us to be seamlessly integrated with our categorical counterparts. We have multiple attendings on campus that are Med/Peds trained to help educate us on evidence-based medicine. Even with the size of the program, it was readily apparent that all the residents were close both in their respective classes and in the program as a whole. I also cannot say enough about the program leadership and staff! Dr. Brady and company are all amazing and actively support the residents in every way. Resident Reflection: In the course of 3+ years now at IU, I have come to appreciate the things that drew me here even more: people, culture, and opportunity. IU is an excellent academic center with a thoughtful midwestern culture. I felt welcomed when I interviewed here and have felt a part of the community from the very beginning. The size of the Med/Peds program and the culture at IU leading many to stay on as faculty after graduation or even for fellowship has created an environment where there is always another Med/Peds person around. The culture prioritizes mentoring and education and has helped me as I have explored career interests and sought out research. The fact that so many stay after training speaks volumes to the quality of the system and the work environment here. Resident Reflection: Both my move to Indianapolis (exactly 1,004 miles from home) and my choice in Med-Peds at IU could not have been more perfect. When I visited, I could tell that this was a place where everyone in the program was invested in helping residents meet their unique goals. Med-Peds is a wide field of opportunities, and as one of the oldest and largest programs in the nation, IU has the privilege of putting their residents on almost every path imaginable. I felt like here I could receive strong, well-balanced training in many areas without sacrificing the special interests that brought me to this field in the first place. I have participated in the Residency Track in Global Health where I learned about healthcare delivery in international settings, and I got to apply this knowledge while training in Eldoret, Kenya for two months during residency. This was a defining experience for my future career plans and one that was uniquely offered by IU. Because of my interest in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine, I have also been able to participate in rigorous research training in Critical Care Medicine focused on delirium and ICU survivorship. With the help of my mentor and IU's P/CCM department, I was able to present research at the American Thoracic Society International Conference. After 3+ years of training, I feel confident in my skills as an Internist and Pediatrician, researcher, and global health physician and prepared to face the next stage of my career. I truly hope each applicant is able to find a residency program that can meet all their needs just as IU was able to do for me!
