Annual Report

Highly skilled and compassionate care continues to be the hallmark of our department. With over 86,000 annual visits and 11,500 surgical cases, our clinical footprint and spectrum of musculoskeletal care continues to expand.

With 42 surgeons and 27 advanced practice providers representing all orthopaedic subspecialties, we provide comprehensive spectrum of care while achieving our goal of timely patient access across the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area and serving a quaternary referral destination for patients with unique conditions throughout Indiana and its borders.

Our research enterprise has been robust in both basic science, translational and clinical investigations with a record number of proposals, grant awards and publications. We have four basic science labs and strong collaboration with other members of the Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health. The result of this effort has led to our recognition as one the most productive orthopaedic research teams in the country receiving generous grant support from multiple sources including the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, industry and others. Primary areas of investigation include orthopaedic trauma, bone healing and regeneration, biomechanics, joint replacement and musculoskeletal cancer.

For more than 60 years, our department has prioritized the education of learners at all levels of training. As musculoskeletal conditions represent a significant percent of all health care diagnoses, we provide novel and comprehensive education for medical students while training the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons. Our full-time and adjunct faculty are dedicated to this task. As a result, our residency program scored 94th and 93rd percentile on the in-service training exam over the past two years, and we continue to graduate exceptionally skilled orthopaedic surgeons. We are committed to excellence in the education of those who will provide the very best of care for our patients.

In summary, 2022 was another highly productive year. As we move forward into 2023, we are anticipating further clinical growth and remarkable academic achievement.
