Students may secure a seat in a Scholarly Concentration and learn of acceptance earlier than many applicants through IU School of Medicine’s new Priority Placement Program.

Indiana University School of Medicine is launching a new admissions opportunity that will enable students to secure placement in a unique educational program that explores critical issues in health care.

Students accepted to IU School of Medicine through the new Scholarly Concentrations Priority Placement Program will learn of their admission in December—earlier than many applicants.

Applicants are eligible to apply for priority placement at any of the school’s eight regional campuses outside of Indianapolis. Each campus offers at least one scholarly concentration in topics such as Quality and Innovation in Health Care; Ethics, Equity and Justice; Biomedical Engineering and Applied Medical Technology; Human Sexuality and Health; and others.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students who plan to pursue a career in medicine to develop knowledge and make connections that will help them tackle some of the most pressing problems in health care,” said Paul M. Wallach, MD, executive associate dean for educational affairs and institutional improvement. “We are looking for students who are excited about the prospect of supplementing their clinical work with scholarly activity that will benefit their future patients, health systems and health care overall.”

About Scholarly Concentrations

IU School of Medicine plans to use its Scholarly Concentrations program to capitalize on expertise throughout its statewide system and to provide students with a unique opportunity to pursue interests beyond the standard medical school curriculum.

The Priority Placement Program enables a cohort of incoming students to secure a seat in the program along with placement at the associated regional campus. IU School of Medicine has regional campuses in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Gary, Muncie, South Bend, Terre Haute and West Lafayette. Students may also apply after matriculation as interest in a topic may develop.

The scholarly work required in the program does not add any additional time or fees to the four-year medical school curriculum. Coursework and projects are completed during the summer, through electives and during less intense times in medical school.

To be considered for the Scholarly Concentration Priority Placement Program in the class that will matriculate in 2020, students must have a minimum 507 MCAT score and 3.5 GPA (science and overall).

Students must first submit a standard application through the American Medical College Application Service® (AMCAS®), the centralized medical school application processing service. While IU School of Medicine will accept general applications through November 15, 2019, students interested in the Priority Placement Program should complete an application no later than July 31.

Eligible students will then receive an invitation to apply to the Scholarly Concentration Priority Placement Program before September 1, 2019.
