INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana University School of Medicine has selected Mark D. Fox, M.D., Ph.D., an expert in community health and providing health care to disadvantaged populations, to become associate dean and director of IU School of Medicine-South Bend at the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Fox has served as associate dean for community health and research development at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa since 2008. He also is  medical director of the OU Wayman Tisdale Specialty Health Clinic and associate director of the Oklahoma Bioethics Center in Tulsa. His appointment at the IU School of Medicine is effective Aug. 1.

“Dr. Fox brings a broad range of critically important skills and experience with him to lead our campus at South Bend and continue our strong collaboration with the University of Notre Dame,” said Jay L. Hess, M.D., Ph.D., vice president for university clinical affairs and dean of the IU School of Medicine.

“Along with its important roles in medical research and education, our South Bend campus has been expanding its clinical education of medical students, so we’re fortunate to benefit from the breadth of Dr. Fox’s leadership,” said Peter M. Nalin, M.D., executive associate dean for educational affairs.

“My colleagues and I at Notre Dame join with Dr. Hess and the faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame in welcoming Dr. Fox,” said Thomas G. Burish, Notre Dame’s Charles and Jill Fischer Provost. “The partnership between our two institutions is already strong, but under Dr. Fox’s able leadership we look forward to further growth and to benefiting our faculty, students and the community.”

“I am pleased to have the opportunity to lead the IU School of Medicine’s South Bend campus,” said Dr. Fox. “The combination of an excellent education program, the opportunity for collaborative research, and the commitment to underserved populations make this position incredibly appealing.”

Dr. Fox received his medical degree as well as a doctorate in religion, ethics and society at Vanderbilt University, and a master of public health degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he completed residency training in internal medicine/pediatrics.

IUSM-South Bend is one of nine regional campuses of the IU School of Medicine across the state. It currently has 66 medical students enrolled. Carl F. Marfurt, Ph.D., the current interim director and the recipient of the 2015 senior class choice for the “best instructor award” — the Golden Apple Award — will continue as interim director until Dr. Fox begins his duties later this summer.
