Bio

Dr. Bhutta joined Indiana University School of Medicine/Riley Children’s Health as Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in August 2022.  He came from the University of Maryland where he served as Professor of Pediatrics and Division Head of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine since 2014. Dr. Bhutta received his medical degree from the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan and did his training in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Arkansas Children’s Hospital followed by additional fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care at the same institution. He served as an attending physician in both the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as well as the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Arkansas Children’s Hospital from 2002-2014 and also served as the Medical Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Arkansas from 2004-2014. Dr. Bhutta is a fellow and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as a member of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society, Society of Pediatric Research and Society for Critical Care Medicine.

    The primary focus of his research is to determine if stress during the neonatal period and infancy, induced by cardiopulmonary bypass or other mechanisms, causes long term changes in the brain and to determine the mechanism of these changes and then to develop techniques and therapeutic agents in an effort to minimize neurologic injury and long-term deficits. In pursuit of this goal, he has examined the use of the NIRS monitor as a surrogate for mixed venous saturation and studied Ketamine as a possible neuroprotective agent.
    He also has maintained an active interest in clinical research related to the care of critically ill children, especially those with cardiac disease. He is the author or co-author of more than 60 publications.
