Bio

Dr. Ritter is a native of West Virginia, and a graduate of the US Air Force Academy, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed a General Surgery Residency at David Grant Medical Center / University of California Davis, and a Fellowship in Advanced Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal and Hernia Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois, Chicago. 

His research focuses on applying innovative simulation solutions to surgical education, and he is an active member of the Americas Hernia Society, the Association for Surgical Education, the American College of Surgeons, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), where he serves on the Board of Governors and has led multiple education-based committees.

He practices at IU Health after A 30-year military career, including 16 years on faculty in the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences & Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. While there, Dr. Ritter served in multiple roles, including Vice Chairman for Education, and Program Director of the General Surgery residency program.

Dr. Ritter has deployed multiple times in direct support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, and his clinical practice focuses on advanced laparoscopic and robotic gastrointestinal and hernia surgery.

He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife and son, and his daughter attends James Madison University in Harrisonburg Virginia. In his free time, Dr. Ritter enjoys exercising, watching and playing all kinds of sports, and riding motorcycles.
