Hugh C. Hendrie, MD

Hugh Hendrie, MB, ChB, DSc, is professor emeritus of psychiatry at IU School of Medicine, distinguished scientist at Regenstrief Institute, and center scientist at the IU Center for Aging Research. He is known for his many contributions to furthering the understanding of dementia and its risk factors—particularly as they apply to diverse populations. He served as a principle investigator for the largest and longest National Institute on Aging-funded study of its kind, the Indianapolis-Ibadan Dementia Project, which was one of the first to identify the link between cardiovascular risk factors and dementia, as well as demonstrating differences in incidence rates and genetic risk factors between the populations. 

Dr. Hendrie is a co-founder of the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center, along with Dr. Bernardino Ghetti and Dr. P. Michael Conneally. He also helped establish the first Alzheimer’s disease clinic with Dr. Martin Farlow at IU Hospital.

Dr. Hugh Hendrie has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards for his work, including the John W Ryan award for Distinguished Contributions to International Programs and Studies from Indiana University, a Medical Research Honoree from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Jack Weinberg Award for Excellence in Geriatric Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association, and the Senior Investigator Award from the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry. He was appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash by the State of Indiana. In 2017, he received the Henry Wisniewski Lifetime Achievement Award in Alzheimer’s Disease Research at the Alzheimer’s Association’s international conference in London. 

Dr. Hendrie continues to collaborate on international studies of dementia and clinical intervention trials for the treatment of dementia.
