Bio

Dr. Ekhaguere completed medical school at the University of Benin, Nigeria. He worked in primary care and completed one year of pediatric residence in Nigeria. He received a master’s in public health and completed his pediatric residency from the University of Iowa. His neonatal-perinatal fellowship program was at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Ekhaguere’s research interest is in improving vaccination rates and monitoring in rural communities in Nigeria. He received a Thrasher Early Career Award during his fellowship to conduct a randomized controlled trial to test the effect of automated voice and call immunization reminders on immunization completion in a semi-rural community in Nigeria. Additionally, in collaboration with three tertiary teaching hospitals in Nigeria, Dr. Ekhaguere set up the first Nigerian Neonatal Registry. He is a co−investigator in the Indiana University Global Network for Women and Children’s Health. Both projects address the scarcity of patient, institutional and community level data, which is fundamental for the identification of key drivers of neonatal morbidity and mortality in low− and middle−income settings.
