Bio

Dr. Stephanie Sharpe joined the teaching faculty in the Medical & Molecular Genetics Department in November 2017.  Dr. Sharpe is a 1994 graduate of Indiana University-Bloomington with a BS in Biology and a minor in Psychology.   Dr. Sharpe graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1998 and completed a residency in Family Medicine at Ball Memorial Hospital in 2001.  After practicing Family & Emergency Medicine for several years, Dr. Sharpe developed a passion for teaching and returned to academic medicine full time at her alma mater in 2017.   Since joining the IUSM faculty, Dr. Sharpe has been very involved in medical education and is the co-course director for Molecules to Cells and Tissues (MCT), a course for first year medical students which combines Medical Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  Dr. Sharpe is a Master Clinician in the Foundations of Clinical Practice (FCP) course and serves as Co-chair of the Admissions Committee for the School of Medicine.  Dr. Sharpe is one of the course directors for the Genetics in Medicine Scholarly Concentration on the Indianapolis campus.  She also serves on the Educational Policy subcommittee of the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.  Dr. Sharpe is passionate about curriculum development and has been very involved in developing online, self-directed learning modules for MCT and the Scholarly Concentration as well as leading a statewide initiative to standardize Medical Genetics didactic content.  In 2021, Dr. Sharpe brought the concept of Grand Rounds to MCT where first year students have the opportunity to meet patients with genetic and metabolic disorders which provides clinical context and humanizes the basic science content.  Grand Rounds provide the students with a deeper understanding of what it's like to be a patient or family member of a patient living with a chronic condition.   Dr. Sharpe served as a Faculty Liaison between the School of Medicine and the Center for Teaching and Learning from 2019-2020.  Dr. Sharpe also directs a Medical Genetics course for Physician Assistant students in their clinical medicine training.  In her free time, Dr. Sharpe enjoys traveling, Notre Dame football, running and spending time with family, friends and her dogs.   Dr. Sharpe is excited to participate in the education of our future healthcare providers.
