Titles & Appointments

  • Assistant Professor of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology
  • Education
2013 PhD Medical College of Wisconsin
    2006 BS Northland College
  • Research

Dr. Canfield’s research program is centered on the development of a human stem cell-derived blood-brain barrier model consisting of brain microvascular endothelial cells, astrocytes, neurons, and pericytes.  The stem cell-derived brain microvascular endothelial cells are responsive to inductive neuronal cues, expresses functional and active efflux transporters, tight junction proteins and nutrient transporters all contributing to a physiological barrier. His laboratory investigates how varying pathological conditions and environmental toxins can negatively affect the blood-brain barrier in an attempt to unveil novel therapeutic strategies.
