Bio

Dr. Gunter is board-certified in general and forensic psychiatry. At Indiana University, she teaches in the medical school, law school and clinical ethics programs. She currently runs a clinic devoted to mental health outcomes after acquired brain injury, and provides mental health care at the Simon Cancer Center, the Advanced Heart Lung Care Clinic, and LifeCare.

Following training in South Carolina, she was Director of the Forensic Evaluation Service for the SC Department of Mental Health. She received the University of South Carolina Neuropsychiatry Department Chairman’s Excellence Award for her work in forensic psychiatry before moving to the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine in 2003 as Director of Forensic Psychiatry and an NIH K-12 scholar working on behavioral genetics. In 2009, she moved to Saint Louis University, as Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Law. She developed a mental health law curriculum for the St. Louis University School of Law and participated in Health Law Scholars Workshops. Her interest in problem solving courts resulted in interdisciplinary collaborations with professors of social work, criminal justice, and law on a grant examining mental health courts in Missouri. Since coming to Indiana she has continued her work in behavioral genetics and developed interests in physician impairment and suicide prevention as well as clinical, legal and ethical issues raised by innovations in neuroscience.

As a clinician, Dr. Gunter has been named in “Best Doctors in America” for several years. She has consulted on over 2000 cases in areas including probate and employment matters as well as criminal and civil litigation. Her long-term goal is to develop a multidisciplinary center devoted to education, research, and service in the area of mental health, ethics and law.
