Emily K. Sims, MD

Bio

I am a pediatric endocrinologist at Riley Hospital for Children and a physician scientist in the IU Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases and the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research. My research passion lies in identifying and understanding risk factors predisposing susceptible individuals to diabetes development, with an ultimate goal of improved risk prediction and development of novel treatments to predict or slow progression of diabetes.

Research

Research interests revolve around pathophysiologic contributors to beta cell dysfunction in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. My group is particularly interested in microRNAs, extracellular vesicles, and DNA damage occurring during the development of diabetes. We are also working to define noninvasive biomarkers of beta cell health to identify individuals at risk for diabetes development so that they may be targeted for earlier interventions and better understand the role of the beta cell in diabetes risk and development.
