Bio

Dr. Matthew Kuhar has served as the Pathology Residency Program Director since 2016.  He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as Dermatology, and his clinical practice is devoted to Dermatopathology.

As a medical student at Drexel University, Dr. Kuhar received the Joel J. Roslyn MD award for Outstanding Leadership while Demonstrating a Notable Level of Commitment and Service to His Fellow Students.  As a pathology resident at IUSM, he was the inaugural recipient of the department’s Resident Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008, and again received the award in 2009.  He was the IUSM House Staff Forum President from 2006-2008. More recently as a faculty at IUSM, he was awarded the 2018 Trustee Teaching Award.  Under Dr. Kuhar’s leadership, the residency program has continuously improved.  Most residents have been able to obtain their top choice for fellowship training and excellent jobs following that.  Many rotations have been restructured to focus on providing high-yield and exceptional training while improving wellness and life balance.  There has been tremendous improvement in resident satisfaction in the quality of their training and their overall training experience.

Dr. Kuhar is also active within IUSM more broadly.  He is the Pathology department’s representative to the Faculty Steering Committee.  He has served on the Diversity Council, Faculty Assembly, Teacher-Learner Advocacy Committee, System Lab Formulary Committee, Graduate Medical Education Committee, and as an inaugural member of the Graduate Medical Education Executive Committee where he was charged with annual program evaluation and quality improvement review for the 100+ accredited residency and fellowship programs at IUSM.  He has also served as the faculty advisor of the Alliance at IUSM student interest group, and he is the Medical Student Career Mentor for the Department of Pathology.

Dr. Kuhar is active in national organizations, especially those related to the accreditation of training programs, the certification of pathologists, and dermatopathology.  He serves on the ACGME Review Committee for Pathology, which sets national accreditation standards for pathology residency and fellowship programs, monitors program compliance with those standards, and renders accreditation decisions.  He co-authored the ACGME Dermatopathology 2.0 Milestones. He is a board examiner for the American Board of Pathology for Dermatopathology certification and also for continuing certification in Anatomic Pathology.  Dr. Kuhar has contributed to reshaping the continuing certification process through his work on the ABPath Continuing Certification Advisory Committee.  He has served on multiple committees of the American Society of Dermatopathology, and currently serves on their Mentorship Awards Committee and Membership Committee. He serves on the Finance Committee and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the United Sates & Canadian Academy of Pathology.
