Vice Chairman and Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Indiana University School of Medicine and Chief of Surgery IU Health University Hospital. He is the immediate past President of the Association for Academic Surgery Foundation (AASF).
He has served on several national surgical organizations as an officer, counselor or committee member including the AAS, SUS, SSAT, CSA, and MSA. He initiated an international outreach program to teach the fundamentals of surgical research in France and has facilitated the development of a program in Australia. Dr. Schmidt has a clinical practice focused on patients with pancreatic disease. He is an internationally recognized expert on precancerous cystic lesions of the pancreas.
He is Surgical Director of the Indiana University Health Pancreas Cyst and Cancer Early Detection Center www.pancyst.com He also leads the Robotic Pancreaticobiliary Surgery Program at Indiana University Health and has been performing robotic pancreatic surgery for nearly a decade.
Dr. Schmidt performs clinical trials and translational research directed at discovering novel biomarkers and targeted treatments of patients with pancreatic neoplasia. His research is or has been continuously funded for 14 years. Funding sources have included NIH, VA, ACS, AACR, PanCAN, Lustgarten Foundation and Bigelow-Brand Charity.
He is Founder “B9 Inc" which specializes in the development of “benign” biomarkers of disease. In the community, he has a significant following as evidenced by the Bigelow-Brand Charity Board which holds major fundraisers for his early detection Program annually. Dr. Schmidt was recently featured on the cover of Indianapolis Magazine as a 2012 Top Doc, was a 2013 Finalist for the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Award.
