Bio

Gavin Roberts, MD, believes ophthalmologists have the ability to make a big, immediate difference in a patient’s life. That’s part of what makes this specialty so meaningful, he said. Roberts has been a professor of clinical ophthalmology at Indiana University School of Medicine—his alma mater—for more than 15 years.

Born and raised in Indianapolis, Roberts completed residency in Wisconsin before returning to the Hoosier State to practice comprehensive ophthalmology, taking a job in Fort Wayne.
During his seven years there, he realized pediatric eye care was his calling.

He left Indiana to complete a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Baylor College of Medicine, working and training in Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. He accepted a job at IU School of Medicine, returning to his hometown of Indianapolis, after completing the fellowship in 2003.

Now, Roberts often works with the university’s fellows, helping to mold them into the next generation of healers. Seeing and hearing of their successes after graduating from the program is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, he said. One of his greatest joys is the privilege of watching his youngest patients grow into mature young adults.
