Julie Clary, MD, MBA

Julie Clary, MD, MBA, has been named the next Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Medicine. Her new role is effective March 1, 2023. She succeeds Bradley Sutter, MD, Interim Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, who stepped in when Michael Ober, MD, left the position to pursue a leadership role at IU Health West.

As Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Dr. Clary will provide leadership and strategic direction in advancing our clinical mission. She will oversee and lead department-wide clinical practices, with management of all clinical service lines. She will lead efforts to improve patient access, promote quality and safety, and enhance practice efficiencies in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

Dr. Clary is highly qualified for this work. She joined the faculty of IU School of Medicine in 2015 as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. She specializes in Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Lipidology and is credentialed by the American Board of Clinical Lipidology in addition to the American Board of Internal Medicine – Cardiovascular Disease. She also serves as Cardiovascular Service Line Operations Leader of the Indiana University Health Physicians Cardiology where she is responsible for assisting with the coordination of patient care activities across all the hospitals served by the IU faculty cardiologists.   

A graduate of DePauw University, Dr. Clary earned her medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine where she also completed her internship, residency and cardiovascular fellowship training and served as chief fellow.  Additionally, she was awarded Masters of Business Administration through the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
 
Dr. Clary is active within the American College of Cardiology having completed the first Emerging Advocates Program as well as the Leadership Academy Cohort II. She is active in advocacy and sits on the Health Affairs Committee, Partners in Quality Committee, and HeartPAC Executive Committee. She serves on the Indiana Chapter ACC Board as well, having completed two terms as Secretary/Treasurer.
 
She enjoys spending time with her family, especially her three children (Simon, 9; Fletcher 7; and Greta, 2) and husband (Nathan). Together, they enjoy being active and spending time outdoors. Additionally, Dr. Clary enjoys running and reading nonfiction.
