Rex given the Sagamore of the Wabash

A respected Indiana University School of Medicine faculty member and trailblazing gastroenterologist has been given the Sagamore of the Wabash, one of the state’s highest honors. Douglas Rex, MD, a distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Medicine at IU, was formally given the title Thursday, Sept. 28, during a boisterous celebration outside the Indiana University Health endoscopy suite named in his honor.

Department Chair finds rich connection in music, medicine

Perched atop a wooden cajón drum and tapping out a beat was David Aronoff, MD, the chair of the Department of Medicine and a physician-scientist specializing in infectious diseases. He’s been a self-taught drummer since he was about 14 years old. He almost majored in music at Indiana University, even took a few classes and picked up sight reading before he settled on microbiology. He attended Tufts University School of Medicine after earning his bachelor’s degree.

IU has great success with first Perry Initiative

Fewer than 8 percent of the nation’s orthopaedic surgeons are women, but groups like The Perry Initiative work to boost that number by holding outreach programs across the country. During these events, female high school, college and medical students who are interested in science, engineering and medicine have the chance to interact and learn from female professionals in the fields they aspire to join.

OB-GYN Department ranks 11th in NIH Funding, Quinney 5th among OB-GYN researchers

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine is ranked No. 11 in 2022 – up from No. 42 in 2015 – and researcher Sara Quinney, PhD, is the fifth highest funded researcher in an OB-GYN department, according to data compiled by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.
